Founded in 1988, the mission of the Youth Symphony of Southern Oregon (YSSO) is to provide exceptional performance experiences under the leadership of professional conductors and music coaches, and to foster a lifelong appreciation of classical music and the arts. Next year marks the YSSO’s 24th season of performances of masterworks for orchestra.
Concert Series performances feature Youth Symphony, Youth Orchestra and Youth Strings. The Youth Symphony and Youth Orchestra include string, brass, woodwind and percussion musicians from throughout the region who present masterful performances of standard orchestral literature and concerti, as well as arrangements for preparatory orchestra. Youth Strings performs special arrangements for young string players. YSSO Concerto Competition winners are featured soloists with the Youth Symphony during the concert season.
Audiences will be impressed by the technical and interpretive abilities of the musicians, as well as their musical and performance skills, and commitment to excellence.
Music opens hearts and minds, builds bridges between the past and present, and brings together people of all ages and backgrounds. Music participation teaches people to listen, and it helps develop creative workforce skills such as teamwork, respect, critical-thinking, discipline and leadership. Music transforms lives and communities.
