About the Event
Featuring the two 100-member Directors’ Bands of the American Band College. Members are from more than 40 states and 6 foreign countries and are working on their master’s degree as part of Sam Houston State University’s American Band College program. Special guest artist is New York Philharmonic principal trombone, Joseph Alessi. He will perform solos with each of the ensembles, including Blue Bells of Scotland and Lincoln Tunnel Cabaret. He will also premiere a special setting of Debussy’s Clair de Lune. Frequent ABC guest composer, Johan de Meij, who has had three major works premiered at the Craterian made the arrangement just for this evening’s performance. Larry Livingston, Chairman of Department of Conducting at The University of Southern California, will conduct Sousa’s Free Lance March and conclude the first half of the concert with the Finale to the Shostakovich Fifth Symphony. On the second half, he’ll present Bach’s Fantasia in G Major plus the Mass and Aztec Dance from La Fiesta Mexicana by H. Owen Reed. Peter Boonshaft, Professor of Music and Director of Bands at Hofstra University, will conduct Landscapes, Rest, Maple Leaf Forever with the first band and Raise of the Son, Song for Lyndsay and Fanfare Hayabusa with the second band. The program will conclude with Max McKee’s setting of The William Tell Overture in which all 200 musicians will sing the music.
